In her happy place
She writes
Uninterrupted
Ocean views
Giving birth to what’s unpredicted
Tales of memories long gone
There
She creates her new home
Castles of sand
Standing alone
Solidifying as she writes
In her happy place
She writes
Uninterrupted
Ocean views
Giving birth to what’s unpredicted
Tales of memories long gone
There
She creates her new home
Castles of sand
Standing alone
Solidifying as she writes
I never thought it a desert
Nor did I ever judge the sands
I thought it a home
That I could hold in the palm of my hands
Sticking to my curly hair
And the shoes I wear
I became a walking desert
Completely unaware
Of the sands of my people
Clinging to my form
I wore as proudly as a soldier
Wearing his uniform
Trust is key
I used to trust the shield
I’d create around me
As she told me
سلام و قول من رب رحيم
I told myself those words
Over and over
As I passed a terrorist stop
As I passed the bombed car
As I closed my eyes to sleep
…
But now I’m safe
Away from it all
And I say those words again
Salamun wa qaulun min rabin raheem
“Peace from a merciful God”
And I hope to rest
Forgetting what I can not forget
The ant circled my empty plate, hopeful
He moved with purpose
But I
Sitting high
Can see the desert he is yet to discover
…
I wondered how I looked to God
Or a being much bigger than myself
Then I washed the ant away
